| Why do I continue to appreciate the Richards ISD experience? Having a background in schools large and small, public and private, north and south, rural and urban, and having a design career, home based business, and more, I find that there are pros and cons in all situations. As it turns out, RISD has so much to offer us all. The retention of teachers from year to year in this district remains stellar as a percentage when compared to other districts, indicating that I am hardly alone in my feelings. There is a sense of community here that is palpable and a climate that continues to improve year after year. The small teacher to Panther student ratio allows students, parents, and teachers to really get to know one another and communicate. For such a small school, the physical facility is continually improving as compared to similarly sized private schools I have known. The area is prime for continued district growth and upgrades offered from year to year show that the board and administration continue to predict improvement rather than cutback, even in these times of national economic struggle. This city and its people refused to merge with other small districts at one point, and they remain loyal as alumni. While the numbers of parents involved remains small, those that do assist are very dedicated and hard-working and/or support fundraisers for our students to have extra-curricular activities (e.g. camps, class trips, etc.). Having attended a huge high school and small(ish) college myself, I have discovered that I much prefer the smaller setting. And while I could enjoy fewer classes to prepare for, and fewer responsiblities at a larger school, the variety of my own learning experiences as I seek improvements for classes are so rewarding and fulfilling that I find myself working more because I love to do it than that I am earning a paycheck and repeating the same lessons day in and day out. The freedom to be a creative teacher and learner is encouraged by the administration and fellow teachers and staff work well with one another. Academically and socially, the district is making huge strides forward. I am optimistic for the students here. While all students can make poor choices, there seems to be a trend toward goal-setting and perserverence rather than the disillusionment that I expected from so small of a community. So, Richards is a perfect fit for me and I hope to remain here the rest of my teaching days. Please share the experience with me. |
