Art I

Art I

Ms. Joelle Dulaney, Instructor

Course Description:

117.52. Art, Level I.  General requirements. Students may fulfill Fine Arts and Elective requirements for graduation by successfully completing the following Art course: Art I (One Credit). (Grades 9-12)

Increase your perception and enjoyment of the environment around you, by allowing yourself freedom for creative expression/performance. Art exposure is shown to increase visual awareness, sensitivity to surroundings, memory, imagination, creative expression of thoughts and ideas, as well as to foster reflective thinking and develop disciplined effort and problem-solving skills.  Various media, subject matter, and styles will be covered as well as basic review of design elements and principles.  By analyzing artistic styles and historical periods, develop respect for the traditions and contributions of diverse cultures. By responding to and analyzing artworks, develop lifelong skills of making informed judgments and evaluations.

We will be addressing the conceptual, expressive, and compositional approaches to art, using a variety of materials.  We will not only explore two-dimensional art (drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, etc.), but we will also delve into three-dimensional art (sculpture, etc.).  Using discipline-based art means that you will combine art creation, appreciation, vocabulary, analysis and critique, history, and much more.  All students will be expected to enter an art contest and participate in the end of year school art show (real or virtual to be determined).

Course Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

            1.         recognize and define the elements and principles of art

            2.         produce art showing individual expression

            3.         analyze the subject and determine appropriate materials, composition, and techniques for producing art

            4.         produce art based on independent decisions

            5.         recognize various historical themes and artists

            6.         evaluate verbally and in writing his/her own art and the art of others

Grading Policy:

Your final grade will be based on class effort, creativity, craftsmanship, and class participation.  Your projects will include an altered/deconstruction book, written and verbal critiques, vocabulary reviews, history quizzes, perspectives, portraits, a sculptural project, entry into an art contest, and a final presentation of your work in our school art show (real or virtual to be determined).  Each 6 weeks students will reflect and do a peer and/or self evaluation and develop their own art portfolio for a grade.

Participation Grading Scale:

A = Superior work, outstanding commitment and daily effort, beyond the norm.

B = Good quality work, strong commitment, growth, quality of effort.

C = Average performance, variable commitment and effort.

F = Poor participation, poor quality or late work, non-participation.

Your classwork/homework grade will be based on your completion of written or creative projects using art elements and design principles, originality, improvement, and identification of work (back of projects or proper heading for written work turned in), and neatness (an indicator of effort, care, and technical skill).

Supplies

Students will purchase a $25.00 Art Student Pack (or bring equivalent supplies from home).  Checks are to be made to RISD with a note indicating a specific student’s name and that it is for an Art Student Pack on the check.

Altered/Deconstruction Book

We will begin an altered/deconstruction book during the second week of school.  You will need a strongly bound book no larger than three inches thick, but no less than 150 pages to begin with.  We will be painting gluing, collaging, and carving pages throughout the year as a record of your art reading and writing lessons.  I have a number of old textbooks and other large books that you may choose from, but if you have an old book that you are planning to get rid of, bring it in and use it!

Throughout the year we will be doing some innovative things and working with as many different media as possible.  It may be necessary to modify this list and have you bring in other supplies for projects based on your own creative ideas.  Donations of art supplies are appreciated.

I look forward to a fantastic year of creativity with you!
